One Day was one of the hit series on Netflix in 2024. Emma and Dexter’s disarming story once more captured many hearts. That same year, David Nicholls, the author of the book on which the series is based, published his sixth novel, You Are Here, in which Marnie and Michael go on a quest for true happiness. He will talk to Barbara De Munnynck.

from coast to coast

Michael, a 42-year-old geography teacher, is trying to get over his wife leaving him by going on long, solitary walks in nature. Marnie is a 38-year-old editor who hardly leaves her small London flat. When a friend invites her to join a group hiking from coast to coast in the North of England, she reluctantly agrees. Michael, too, has grudgingly joined this small group. The hike proves to be something of a trial, and the persistent bad weather soon means that Marnie and Michael are the only ones left on the hike. Forced into each other’s company, a tentative friendship develops that could turn into something more, but the journey doesn’t always go as planned.

One Day, David Nicholls’ third novel, was published in 2009 and became an international bestseller that has already sold more than six million copies. In 2011 the book was adapted into a film starring Anne Hathaway, and last year it was adapted into a series by Netflix: once again, Emma and Dexter’s ill-fated love story was an instant success.

In his books, David Nicholls perfectly balances harsh life lessons with a sense of humour that puts things into perspective. He navigates between tenderness and cruelty, giving an original twist to love stories that always steer clear of romantic clichés.
