Jewish Traces in Lebanon

In April 2016, Sabyl Ghoussoub went searching for traces of Jewish life in Lebanon, through the ruins of synagogues and cemeteries.

In 1948 there were about twenty thousand Jews living in Lebanon, that number increased with the influx of Jews from Iraq and Syria until 1967. Today the community counts 50 to 2000 members. Friendly with some members of the community, the artist knew nothing of their places of worship. Curious to find out more a few google searches led him first to the Magen Abraham Synagogues of Beirut. Built in 1926, it had the reputation of being the most beautiful of the region. It is situated in the old Jewish quarters of Beirut and has been renovated in 2010. Those and other photos found on Google promted Sabyl to seek them out and document his visit.
